How to Craft a Communication Strategy |
|
Have an important message?
Do you have to communicate with important people?
To communicate effectively, you have to begin before you begin -- before you begin writing that is!
Effective communication begins with a strategy. A plan and a statement that ensure you put your words into the right framework.
How to Craft a Communication Strategy, guides you through the four steps involved in developing a strategy and a statement for the strategy.
In a concise 16 page booklet you'll follow the story of John Smith, a manager who's faced with a communication challenge. You'll look over his shoulder as he works out his objectives, defines the needs of the people who will receive his message, review the vehicles (media) for communicating his message, and develop a strategy statement.
At each stage of the journey, you'll not only see his example, but all the key points have been set out clearly for you. After reading this booklet, you'll be ready to pull out a piece of paper and write out your own strategy.

Communication Flows in Organizations |
|
To understand and master organizational communication we need to grasp directional flows.
Downward communication generally provides enabling information -- which allows a subordinate or a supplier to do something. For example, instructions on how to do a task.
Upward communication most often involves compliance information -- the subordinate or supplier advises that he or she has completed the task, or that they're unable to complete it for some reason.
Lateral communication normally involves coordinating information, and allows people with the same or similar rank in an organization to cooperate or collaborate.
And, the fourth flow is our old friend the grapevine. As we we know, it goes in every direction and despite complaints about it, the grapevine has an important role: it fills in the gaps. When there's an information vacuum, the grapevine fills it.
In the 7 page booklet, Communication Flows in Organizations, you'll learn more about each of these flows and how to work with them. For example, the information in downward communication gets more detailed as it moves down through an organization.
